What You've told us
It makes sense: Moving parts of the political system North will create badly needed jobs and create massive investment. It will also help to save money in the long run as people in London working for the government are paid more for living in London. But the real question I want ot ask is if Mrs Pritchard (or other equivalent person) was to stand could there be enough support for us to actually change our country in a way that we want?
sylvia clare: we cannot wait for businesses to sort their green issues out - we need to impose it on everyone as quickly as possible and end the madness that is the game playing of current politics.
carol gaydon: Voting should be compulsory with the option of registering a vote of no confidence.
John Owen: I do not understand many peoples problem with the monarchy, they seem to want it abolished completely. I quite like the idea of the royal family, but I do see it as a huge problem that we continue to give them millions of pounds every year. I think we should give the queen and her immediate family enough money to fund the traveling involved in carrying out their duties, and a little a little more besides (many people like to say the royals do absolutely nothing but on the contrary they have an amazingly full schedule, meeting people, which takes up just as much time as any other job - admittedly this is a very easy job in many peoples opinion, but it is still a job and therefore they deserve to be paid) but no more. In this way we would still have our royal family, who give many a sense of pride and do in fact bring in a substantial amount of money through tourism.
Callum Salfield: The house of lords should be filled using proportional representation of the partys votes nationwide.
Pam Kay: Olympics: Why on EARTH should Londoners be hit with paying a tax for something that will not benefit them one iota. It 'may' benefit some shops, However it will cause havoc on public transport. If the governent 'have to impose a tax' then the whole country should pay - not those who happen to live in SE England.
Jude SB: A fresh look needs to be taken at all the endless regulations infringing on our liberty to live as we choose. We are losing so much of our liberty, so are our children who's lives now seem to be controlled 24/7 by not allowing them the freedom to play and maybe even hurt themselves! Thank God I gave mine freedom to live a life of risk and to take responsibility for themselves... The nitty gritty of it is insurance, which makes regulations necessary to protect and ultimately imprison the soul!
Paul Kendrick: Land Value Taxation - it needs to be part of the debate - its part of the solution.
Marc Warde: I feel the UK general public almost need to be woken up to the world or at least England we live in. I find the apathy and fear of sharing our real opinions (or lack thereof) frightening. We almost need to have a forced education to understand politics. The consequences of inaction are grave and we should sit up and listen. I would recommend the film V for vendetta as a warning!
Tami: We should ban cars for a day each week. Gradually increasing the day ban to 2,3,4,5 and then 6 days a week so that there is a 'privelage' day when the UK general public can use cars. To make this successful we need to increase public transport so that it can cope with taking EVERYONE to and from work. I also think that this Healthy eating campaign for schools is great! Teachers are complaining that it isn't working and kids aren't buying the canteen food, well stop them leaving school at lunch time and give them JUST TWO choices: Packed Lunch and Canteen. Our schools healthy eating campaign is great we are having so much yummy food! The next step is to stop school kids buying junk food from shops if they are in uniform or Mon-Fri. (Well.... it could work!)
sarah: i think what has been said and done by ros pritchard is spot on this is exactly wot this country needs.
Emma Jenny Taylor: This site is great.
George B. Pope: When will the powers that be realize that installing the Severn Barrage would eliminate the need for a new nuclear power station in the south west.
Jackie Hooper: There is nothing wrong with Europe. It's the EU that is messing everything up.
Christopher Remer: How about replacing the House of Lords with an elected house, with seats based on the share of the national vote? The House of Commons would still be elected on the first past the post system, to allow strong governments to be created, but the new House of Lords would be the revising / reforming chamber which would reflect national opinion.
brits royal fan: britain hasnt outgrown the monarchy at all, we just need a new monarch. and removing the monarchy wont just effect britain not forgetting but 16 other nations aswell as the other 52 commonwealth countrys.
Nathan Shreeve: I find it highly hypocritical that the government complains at the huge amount of those who are unemployed when they cannot afford to pay for higher education thanks to the governments "brilliant" idea of top up fees. Someone made a HUGE mistake there!!!!
Gareth Butler: I support the idea of moving Parliament to Bradford! Now just get rid of the Scottish and Welsh assemblies...
Grant Thoms: Moving UK Parliament and government to Bradford from the over-heated South East is commonsense. No further need for airport expansion, closer to get to by rail, regenerate the North, and of course, let's be a democratic republic. Go girl!
addywaddy: Thanks Ros! Your values and ways of running this counrty have really started to change things. I'm from Bradford, and I say BRING IT ON WESTMINSTER! THANKS ROS! Mwah x
Peter: I used to think that the Royal Family was well past its sell by date, but when I thought about replacing it, I changed my mind. First of all, to bring in a President would require so many constitutional changes that a written constitution would be required, and how long would that take to produce? Secondly, I assume that we would replace the Monarch with a President with similar limited powers, so what is the point? All you would be doing was introducing political partisanship at the pinnacle of Government. With the present system we know who gets the job next, so there is none of the political intrigue that a Presidential election would undoubtedly produce. Finally, the system works, why change it?
alison: i think mrs pritchard is a strong reliable woman who has the ability to achive anythink she desires. i think us shes as bold as anything iv ever come across
S. Eagleson: I think that moving parliament from London is short sighted and reactionary. Considering the population density in the south of England, Bradford can hardly be considered central. I think that the monarchy are an integral part of our country and still very much part of our nationhood. It is too easy to dismiss everything with history as obsolete. How about Scotland? Scottish independence should be a cornerstone of Mrs Pritchards policies.
Elwyn Jones: I am resident in Neths, but have a postal vote in Swansea. I want the C of E to be disestablished; Upper House wholly elected with no more than 100 members; Monarchy reduced to Scandinavian model (we become citizens NOT subjects); House of Commons remodelled as semi-circle with just 400 seats: regional assemblies like Wales and Scotland of about 100 members; all elections by PR with STV in multi-member constituencies; a written constitution with a Bill of Rights and supreme court of 9-11 judges; halting state taxes to faith schools; no compulsory RE or assemblies in schools; Welsh and Ulster elements added to national flag displayed in every public building and school classroom and oath of allegience sworn by kids each day in ALL schools (including private), a new national anthem (maybe Elgar's famous march or Parry's Jerusalem). We can still have a splendid Coronation, but no throne in Parliament. Also fixed parliaments of 4 or 5 years.
R!pJ: I advise you start a programme of massive deregulation. Privatise beaches, public transport and dare I say it; the National health service. The NHS is the biggest drain on our society, along with the 121 billion spent on social services. Cut the lot and give it back to the people in tax cuts. You think people run their own lives and this is the perfect opportunity to show that you trust us.
beth: Why Bradford? Does anyone know where the population centre of the UK is? there are 8 million people in london so I reckon its down here somewhere!
KC: I think you should get rid of the monarchy. What do they do? Nothing!
Leo Jones: Your latest diary entry asks if the new parliament should have a throne. Of course it should. 70% or more of ordinary British people support the monarchy according to every poll taken since 1945. The republicans tend to be middle class and especially arty types who work in politics and the media. Mrs Pritchard stay true to your ordinary roots and leave the Queen alone.
BiG Al: Give an option if you get caught driving too fast in front of a speed camera. no fine but 6 points on you license, or 3 points and £500 fine, those that moan about it being a revenue collector can take the choice. Anyone with 10 or more points has two years to retake the whole driving test, or after two years loose their license.
Sean: First of all removing troops from Iraq is a good thing. There presence there endangers the British public, not only abroad but here at home. It is about time we left these countries to sort themselves out, we are no longer the major superpower in the world, the Empire is gone. Yes i think we should moniter the situations in the middle east particularly, but it is fair to say Britain meddles far too much! I also think that it is clear that our position in Europe is damaging us. There is pressure to join the Euro, and then we have to abide by their laws which are not checked by our government! Perhaps if we are under the rule of the European Union we should go as far as leaving. Britain is strong enough to stand on its own, Europe would lose out not us. Another issue is the United States of America. Why should Britain be bullied by America. We were once their rulers, why should we bow to them all the time, it is not the "special friendship" that they always promote! Again, Britain is strong enough to stand alone. By been bullied by America we have allowed ourselves to become the number one terrorist target! The Royal family is an important aspect of British Culture. where else in the world has traditions kept as we do? Britain is not a Republic! We have survived through adaptation! Our monarchy has a vital role not only in government but also the economy. The Queen is the third body which makes up the government, along with the two houses. The Royal family and and palaces give a pull factor which brings tourism! it would be a shame to lose this unique heritage which is found nowhere else on the planet!
Alex Walker: I agree with your stand on the European Union and subjecting its policies to our standards and believe it should be more widely discussed.
g cannon: Mrs Pritchard's illustation of the absurdity of the flood of EU rules was fantastic.
Snibbo Snibbs: I think you should move the goverment to Manchester!
andy kerr: I think that all people that are claiming unemployment benefits should earn the benefit by community work, this has the benefits of both reintroducing the long term unemployed to a working pattern. Also means that the unemployed feel that they are members of society by investing their time into society. It might also help reduce the levels of low level anti social crime if the members of the community feel that he community belongs to them.
Nanna Bess: Resignation? How can you think of such a thing, Mrs P! Think of your voters, your supporters! Don't let us down!
Matt: stop all benefits right now , now more government handouts and spend the tax wisely instead or atleast on something of real benefit to the people such as education or hospitals
Richard: hi i like the way you run thing at 10 downing street its great you got me more insterested in polictes
James Love: Change the House of Lords by having half the house chosen at random from the population to sit for 2 years. Input from the people.
Mrs. Prity Patel-Bedia: There should be more funding availbale to the voluntary sector , who have access to the community and are committed and repsonsive to the needs of the local people.
David Philip Greenwood: What if we had different economic areas with different currencies in addition to one national currency valued yearly against the harvest? The local currencies can be bought and sold across the land. Different areas specialise in different products and services.
not for ye: moving parliament to bradford is hardly moving it to the people - considering the large population of london.
Sophie: Our country needs to stop focusing on everything around us and for one second look at our problems. We need someone to appriciate us, the little people becasue together we make the country and isnt that what matters?
David Scott: Just give us back the right to govern ourselves. No to the EU.
GBenno: We musn't allow the millions of immigrants from the rest of the world into Britain; the infrastruture connot take it, and the distrust and anger that results from such mass immigration can only lead to racism and negative stereotyping by people who are so tired of the current situation.
Leo Jones: Mrs Pritchard is meant to be all about chucking out New Labour spin and sorting out the country. So what does she do, she spends money moving Parliament. How New Labour, a symbolic act that allows her to look different without making an substantial change to anything important. Next thing she will do is change the Union Flag and Royal Crown and other window dressing.
J. H.: I agree with what M. N. said about PE and how people are not enjoying it due to the way it operates. Now I have been thinking about this for a while and I am going to start a campaign to allow students in secondary schools to be able to deside what they want to do every term, give them some freedom and they also get their 2 hours of required exersise that the government wants.
Steve Guy: 20% of constituencies should go to the polls each year. This would mean the PM's job would be on the line every year if he wasn't getting it right!
Scarlett Sotiris: politicans need to invovle the public not alienate them, then the trust and honesty of politics is one step closer to being restored.
Ian Smith: Retain some full-time politicians, but replace the majority by a mixture of leaders from different spheres of activity - businessmen, church, military, writers, "intelligentsia", etc. Include INTELLIGENT, COMMON-SENSE people such as Ian Hislop, Germaine Greer, writers, artists, & the like.
Bruce Parkin: Voting should be compulsory, and proportional representation, but there should be a box for "None of the Above". One cynic said. "If voting would change anything, the government would ban it immediately".
Daniel Preston: the goverment should devolve the decision making process on those decisions that affect all of us. legislation affecting schools, hospitals, public transport etc. should be passed in front of the public. The bill could be announced on tv then all comments could be sent into a website where an independent body made up of normal people that changes for every bill, like jury service, decides what parts to ammend and what to add or take away from the bill. All legislation that is not of top secret or matters of national security should be avaliable for download online.
Robin Palmer Hosking: We NEED to address the real need for more support for those of us who wish to support our economy through our own ventures. There is little support out there for those of us who think big like yourself. We also need to somehow motivate the kids of today away from the celebrity culture. It is not doing anyone ANY good. Not only is it contibuting to debt, it is also providing kids with a false sense of duty and being.
Mrs Charmian Rowley: I am concerned about the waste of public money by the lack of/bad decision making of policitians. Most families manage a budget, surely they are best placed to decide on how their taxes are best spent.
Phillippa Thompson: we should not have any fighting troops, weapons or violence. Money should be put in to peace initiatives.
Mr J G Toms: definately like the idea of moving government to Yorkshire. It would definitely sort out the wheat from the chaff!!!
M. N.: I may be only 13 years old but i have thoughts on political views. at my school we have p.e. we have outdoor which consists of rugby and football. And indoor which consists of movement and balancing. now i struggle with outdoor because im not a violent person and so rugby makes me feel very intimidated and i feel humiliated because i cant do something. i find indoor easier but i dont find it very stimulating. In my opinon as a person who faces this subject twice a week feel imbarrised and pressured, i would find it easier if i did more sports suited to me such as peoper dance, eg tap, mordern etc and for outdoor alot of people would benifet from doing less violent sports such as badminton or basketball. From the pe im doing now it makes me feel like not going to school if i have that subject on the day. I wish that we had the choice what to do. But these are just opinions of a 13 year old.
Julie Daniels: oil, education, pensions, america, europe, hunger, health services, immigration, charity, wealth, poverty... lets start to make a real difference and actually mean what we say, lets try and make change for the benefit of all and not the few.
Nick Russell: Can blokes join in too? Or do we have to start our own party?
Les Woods of Lincoln: I believe that everything is virtually in place for this country to become great again. Mrs Pritchard and her Purple Party should concentrate on making us all believe in ourselves again, please. Put taxes up if you must. Somehow improvement has to be paid for. I trust Mrs Pritchard not to waste my money.
Duncan: At last someone standing up for common sense. We need someone in government who really knows their onions.
Aisha: today i was just thinking "why can't we have an honest politician who tells it like it is?" and now here she is ! Mrs Pritchard Thank you!
Alrex: i live in bradford and i think that it is a great idea to move parliament to bradford.
